There was pretty much only one way to drive across Afghanistan in 1977. The center of the country was a mostly impenetrable desert with no proper roads. We drove into Afghanistan via Taybad, Tirpul to Harat. On to Kandahar and then Kabul via Ghazni. North to Charikara and west to Red City. Camped in field beside ruins, then on to Bamiyan and Band-i-Amir. Back to Kabul via the Salang Pass. Then on to Peshwar, Pakistan via the Khyber Pass. |
