We drove over the Khyber Pass from Kabul to Peshawar on July 3, 1977. The next day we drove on to Lahore, where we spent two nights. On July 5th, General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq staged a coup against Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. We departed Lahore for India on July 7th.
